Media Experiences

U.S. News & World Report, Writer

  • As a writer in the consumer advice vertical, I worked primarily with the education section. This role enabled me to connect with sources, review data and work with editors to complete articles in a timely fashion. My understanding of AP style and ethical reporting techniques helped me in this position.

U.S. News & World Report, Digital Producer

  • As a digital producer, my responsibilities included publishing articles through a CMS, collaborating with writers and editors, developing intuitive infographics, aiding in project launches and selecting photos for articles. I worked in the consumer advice vertical, which comprised of the publication’s education, health, real estate and money sections.

The Hare Satirical Newspaper, Editor-in-Chief

  • For my final semester at the University of Maryland, I had the honor of serving as the editor-in-chief of the UMD Hare, the campus satire magazine. While the news we created was fake, the responsibilities were very real. During my tenure, I oversaw the production of the club’s first print magazine and finalized the layout for another. In this position, I oversaw an editorial board and a writing staff of nearly two dozen creative students. I led weekly meetings with my editors where I discussed deadlines and ways to improve the publication. Additionally, I led engaging biweekly meetings with the writing staff and media creators where we would drum up fun ideas to make happen. My legacy as the club leader was establishing a uniform editing process for future editors to follow. This experienced combined my leadership skills and journalism education for an opportunity to critique campus news and make people smile.

Hyattsville Life & Times, Web Intern

  • During my last semester at the University of Maryland, I worked with the Hyattsville Life & Times local newspaper as their web intern. In this position, I oversaw the hyperlocal publication’s social media accounts. I was in charge of posting twice weekly to their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Additionally, I was tasked with writing one digital article a month for the publication.

Capital News Service, Reporter

  • Capital News Service is a student-led news outlet managed by the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. Reporters are undergraduate and graduate students who operate in a newsroom for their semester-long capstone project. During the Fall 2020 semester, I worked as a reporter in the Annapolis bureau of Capital News Service, covering Maryland news. My beats included technology, cybersecurity and public health. This experience allowed me to work closely with an editor and fellow journalists to create the best articles possible. The opportunity only lasted a semester, but it cemented the skills of a professional writer in the workplace including accurate reporting, digital storytelling techniques and interviewing sources.

College Park Here & Now, Intern, Writer

  • There was a shooting in College Park in October 2020. I was enrolled in a journalism newswriting course at the time and decided to cover the tragedy to practice my reporting skills. My professor gave me a heads up that a local newspaper was looking for a reporter to cover the event after it happened. This is how I was hired to write for the College Park Here & Now local newspaper. From October 2020 to April 2021, I wrote one article bi-monthly as a freelance writer. Starting May 2021, and lasting until September 2021, I worked as the newspaper’s intern staff writer. In this position I had to write two 1,000-word articles for the publication that ranged from local real estate development to a spotlight of a neighborhood accordion player. This position allowed me to work with my editor and use the reporting and interviewing skills I learned in class.

The Hare Satirical Newspaper, Multimedia Dir.

  • Before I was editor-in-chief, I served as the satire publication’s multimedia director from its inception, February 2020. After the pandemic forced classes online, I saw an opportunity to grow the UMD Hare’s digital presence. Whereas every other comedy club on campus had to wait until campus reopened, I worked diligently with the club’s editor and founder to create a presence on the major social media platforms. In this position, I oversaw the publication’s Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok account. Under my leadership, I grew our Instagram following from zero to 1,200 users over the course of a calendar year. Additionally, I grew our TikTok following from zero to 800 over the course of eight months (I personally filmed, edited and published every TikTok until I left the position). Aside from social media, I founded the club’s video department that provided “man on the street” style interview style videos. Also, I founded the club’s podcast, “Bad Hare Day,” where I handpicked the podcast’s showrunner, who continues it today. While the University of Maryland was virtual for a whole year, the UMD Hare blossomed under my leadership as multimedia director.
